The Arroyo Goats
A natural approach to fire prevention, protecting the place we love.
600+ Goats Completed Fuel Reduction Across 100 Acres
Thanks to favorable conditions and the incredible work of over 600 grazing goats, the Arroyo Goats pilot project completed its fuel reduction work ahead of schedule.
In partnership with the City of Pasadena, the One Arroyo Foundation brought targeted goat grazing to 100 acres of the Arroyo Seco, helping reduce wildfire risk in one of Pasadena’s designated Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. Over several weeks, the goats cleared dry brush and invasive plants before they could become fire fuel, while easily navigating steep terrain where traditional equipment is difficult to use. Along the way, they also helped cycle nutrients back into the soil and created conditions that support healthier native habitat and plant regrowth over time.
Following the devastating 2025 wildfires in Altadena and the Pacific Palisades, this pilot project demonstrated how nature-based solutions can play an important role in building a more fire-resilient Pasadena.
What Happens Next
With grazing now complete, One Arroyo is supporting the City’s efforts to assess the outcomes of this pilot program and explore next steps to support long-term habitat health and wildfire resilience in the Arroyo.
This includes monitoring vegetation recovery, evaluating impacts on native habitat, and identifying opportunities for future stewardship and fuel reduction efforts.
